The Washington Marriott Capitol Hill is a modern hotel located near Union Station, offering sizable rooms and a convenient location for exploring the city. However, reviews consistently highlight noise from nearby train tracks, inconsistent service, and occasional issues with amenities and room functionality, particularly regarding outdated technology and a lack of some promised services.
Did not meet Marriott standards in my opinion. Forget that it is right next to a major rail station? Like literally 10-15 rails all come together, immediately next to the hotel. A few things that were not great right away. Bathroom light did not work unless I flipped main switch by entry door. I had a jr. Suite and neither t.v. worked well. The one in the sitting area was on the fritz blinking non stop and the one in the bedroom would randomly turn off and changing channels took literally 10-15 seconds to load up. The next thing, no snack bar, the snacks are literally hidden 10 ft high behind the bar. Maybe the neighborhood is sketchy but never seen anything like it at a Marriott, needless to say I just figured it wasn't worth it to try to get someone to get me something. Anyways, the rooms are clean and beds are nice quality but definitely some weird things going on here.
The only good thing that happened here was being provided a room at 9 am, seven hours ahead of the listed check-in time. It was all downhill from there. I paid hundreds for this room for a single night and then they added a mandatory $32 "destination fee" that only gave me $16 credit for breakfast, a meal I never got the next morning because the stop time was convoluted on the little card they hand out. The 10:30am stop time listed at the top was only for the grab and go area, not the actual breakfast that stops at 10:00 am. That stop time was way at the bottom of the card. So I got a tuna sandwich and some yogurt for my $16. What a ripoff! Earlier stop times should be at the top, not the bottom. The other hotel amenities listed on the card (such as the $5 credit for the grab and go area) were not available at my level. So, don't give me a card that tells me I have services that I don't actually have. Other things included on the card included free alcohol which is not part of my lifestyle, and an Arlington tour that's only useful if you have time for it in your schedule. That fee needs to be a choice, not a mandate. All I got for free with my room was coffee. I got free coffee at Motel 6 for a fraction of the room rate here. On top of all this, there were electrical sockets in my room that didn't work, there was no clock anywhere so you couldn't tell the time without tapping your own phone, and the coffee pot leaked coffee when trying to fill it because you had to pull it out from under a shelf to raise the lid and then the movement made the coffee leak out the front. It was a mess. I would never choose this hotel again.
We were here for a wedding. Nevin and his manager were very accommodating and helpful. Our room was 6 floors up and directly above the train tracks and we had no issues with the noise. Location was very close to the metro station.
I would have never thought we needed to read reviews for Marriott location before booking, but seeing that there’s consistent concerns from other patrons we should have just booked elsewhere and avoided our experience. Friday night- Checked in and the hotel itself is very nice. We thought it was interesting that there was a check list of how to sleep soundly including earplugs and a sound machine. We discovered that this was likely provided because of the train yard next door, but we did not anticipate that we would be kept awake until 1am from music from the rooftop bar of our own hotel. The bass was so loud it could be heard with the sound machine and the television on. Repeated attempts to call the front desk to address before someone finally picked up. This was discussed Saturday morning and handled well by the front desk, but guests should reasonably expect that the hotel follows the city ordinances of outdoor noise levels, particularly as it is impacting those staying on their premises. Sunday we checked out and checked three bags at the front desk to be held for the day. My work cellphone was in a deep side pocket with a Velcro closure, but was either removed or fell out in that room. This was discovered Monday morning, confirmed via tracking that it was at the hotel and I called them around 6:30-6:45am and was told to call back in two hours when housekeeping was in. Called back around 9am and was informed I would need to speak to housekeeping who runs lost and found; explained again that it was not left in a room but the checked bag room. Speaking with Nebiu Bekele, the day manager, who told me that he was just in the checked bag room and there was no phone. Left my number, called back at 12:30 when I did not hear back from them and was informed that the person, Vive, who runs housekeeping and therefore had access to the safe was 'off for two days' and would be back on Tuesday. He said she was the only person within the entire hotel system with access to the safe, which would make it impossible that she locked it in the safe Sunday when it was left in the baggage room, if she was in fact off for two days and was back on Tuesday. As the conversation progressed and I got continued resistance I inquired if I should be worried that someone did it fact remove the phone from my bag and Nebiu asked me if I would like him to file a police report to which I said yes. He never followed through with that. Spoke to general Marriott customer service on Monday who urged me to get my phone back prior to filing a formal complaint, as if that may prevent the hotel in D.C. from sending me back my phone appropriately. She filed a request with the hotel and asked that they communicate with me via email, but no communication from the hotel was ever received (Case 864671087.) Called the hotel back Tuesday and spoke to Tiffany at the front desk who was incredibly helpful- provided an email to send a pre-paid shipping label to and I sent that over within ten minutes of hanging up with her and requested confirmation of receipt within the email, which never came. No mention of this email address or plans for how to get the phone back to me with the 'manager' Nebiu on Monday when I spoke to him multiple times. Watched tracking throughout the week and it never started, but I was optimistic that that was on UPS. Called Monday morning to inquire about the status and again spoke with Tiffany. It took me calling back twice after being left on hold for a total of 40 minutes to get a confirmation that they had the return label and the phone was being sent back to me. I received the phone back 11 days after my stay. There are so many options of where to stay in this area, I can't discourage someone enough from staying at this property.
This hotel is modern and has beautiful rooms. The lounge is on the second floor with breakfast options and snacks & drinks throughout the day. Everything was great, the only negatives I would have to say are: I got a notification saying my room was ready at 11am. When I tried checking in, nothing was available. The front desk asked for my number to send me a text when my room would be ready, so I left the hotel to explore but I never got a text. Being located right by the train station, the horns were blasting at early hours of the day. If you’re on a lower level floor facing the trains, expect it to be noisy. They provided a sound machine, but it was still disrupting. They charged a destination fee, but I was not provided the offerings included with the destination fee. When I asked the front desk, they said I wasn’t charged even though I showed them the line item on the bill.
Overall a pretty fantastic stay. This place is pretty gorgeous, the rooftop bar/restaurant Ciel is awesome with decent food. Room is overall luxurious. The downsides of the room were really poor water pressure, some basic amenities functions that weren't maintained, like a broken clothing steamer and the the drains were remarkably slow, and confusing lights - the hall light has to be on for the bathroom lights to switch on. You cannot be the location. This neighborhood's fantastic, the Bulletin restaurant nearby is great and a good value.
The breakfast was absolutely horrible. For the price, you could offer pancakes, waffles, or sausage. I felt so taken advantage of and you don’t even provide ketchup. I demand some type of reimbursement for at least my son who didn’t eat bc selection was horrible and food was cold. Never will I eat breakfast at a Marriott. Service is low bc of breakfast!
Bartender turned away a customer who was doing work quietly in the lobby all because she had her dog with her. The dog was just laying down and doing nothing to bother people. As a dog person myself this is crazy. I understand if the dog was causing issues but this is not acceptable. I will be canceling my next week booking just to go somewhere else in the are.
The hotel bartender was crazy rude to me! I wanted to buy a few drinks while I got some work done with my dog at the bar, since this is supposedly a dog-friendly hotel. I was the only customer there when they opened for the night. But before I could even place an order, the bartender kicked me out because he was afraid my dog "might bother the other customers". Again, this is in the open lobby of a dog-friendly hotel. Nobody else was there. My dog was doing nothing at all, just sitting on the floor. I don't understand what his deal was, but there's far better service elsewhere.
The building is only 3-4 years old. The surrounding neighborhood is very new with most of the buildings erected recently. Love the hotel, loved the friendliest staff, love the very spacious room, very nicely done with decorations and layout of the room, very modern-day designs. A lot of people complained in the review regarding train noise but I actually enjoyed the background train noise. It was very calming to me. There are no signs anywhere. For example, once you come out of the elevator there should be a sign to say which direction your room is located. But no...you have to guess which way. No signs of any kind in the lobby either, which way is elevator, lounge, bar, restaurants, etc... Besides all that, the most important thing should be the rooms. BUT...the walls of the hotel is very, very, very, very thin. I mean you can hear the conversation in the next room thin, even foot noises on the wooded floor. Sometimes it almost sounded like he was sitting right next to us and they weren't even talking loud. The alarm went off next room in the morning and it was like next to my bed. When they open and close the room door, it echoes so loudly that it feels like they were slamming the door, hard, every time. And oh by the way, the residential side is connected to the hotel. Very confusing if you entered through a wrong door. Like I said before, there are no signs to be found.
