The Melrose Georgetown Hotel receives mixed reviews, primarily citing cleanliness and maintenance issues alongside positive feedback on location and staff friendliness. Recurring concerns include unexpected fees (historic preservation tax and valet charges), room disrepair (stains, outdated furnishings, and A/C problems), and inconsistent service. Despite some challenges, several guests appreciate the hotel’s central location and helpful staff.
What a huge disappointment! In every aspect of our stay. I will keep it short and just give you the highlights or nightmare issues. It started when we checked in and our room was truly uninhabitable. The headboard was made of leather and it was ripped and torn so badly that I had to put a sheet up to not get flakes of leather on us while laying in the bed. It was a ridiculously busy weekend in DC that week. I would’ve never stayed at the hotel otherwise I would’ve asked to check out immediately. The bathroom had such dirt and buildup in the corners of every place in the bathroom. It was disgusting. You are required to pay a historical hotel fee each night on top of the other resort fees that you’ve already paid. The final kickoff was we had a family emergency back in Florida and had to leave one day early. Now remember, it’s a super packed weekend so it’s not like they were dying to fill the place. We had told them the night before and they said they would talk to the manager in the morning. When we finally left in the morning, the woman at the front desk, said after we told her of our nightmares, stay that she would absolutely approve the refund of the last night we did not use. I booked through a third-party, Paisley, and the woman said I had to contact them. When I did, they reached back out to the hotel and the hotel refuse the refund. I called back to ask what the problem was and the manager. Aaron said he understood and apologized and would send my refund. It has now been almost 4 weeks I have contacted him and left messages. Two different occasions with no answer. There are so many beautiful amazing hotels in the DC area do not waste your time at this one.
Stayed one night in May 2026, booked through Priceline. Between the room, the staff, and the surprise charges, this was one of the worst hotel experiences I’ve had. The billing is where it gets predatory. At check-in, the front desk took my car keys without mentioning that valet costs $80 per night and without offering self-parking. A $100 hold was placed on my credit card with no explanation of what charges would be billed to it, and no mention of the $80/night valet or a mandatory $30 “Historic Preservation Fee" plus taxes on both. When I picked up my car, the valet attendant implied parking was included and I could tip if I wished. No receipt at checkout and I noticed $129 in charges I was never told about appearing on my card. I contacted the hotel; they refused to refund anything and didn’t even address the valet charge. The mandatory fee wasn’t included in my Priceline booking total, though the same hotel does disclose it on other booking sites like Expedia. I’ve disputed the charges with my bank and filed a complaint with the FTC. The room was embarrassing for a property that calls itself a 4-star hotel. Furniture was falling apart. The bathroom walls were dirty with unidentifiable specks around the mirror and along the walls. The shower ceiling was heavily stained with what appeared to be mold. The sink had almost no water pressure; we could barely wash our hands, let alone wash our faces. A single $10 water bottle, no water fountain on our floor. After seeing the state of things, we actively tried not to look too closely at anything else just to get through the night. Staff communication was poor throughout our stay, from check-in to checkout. That’s ultimately how you end up being told parking is included and then charged $80+ for it. A dirty room, inattentive staff, and billing practices that rely on guests not noticing surprise charges. One of the worst values in DC. Do not book this hotel.
They will hit you with a $34/day “historic hotel feel” at checkout that wasn’t disclosed earlier unless you read the fine print, an honest business would just add this to the price up front. Despite paying this fee the rooms feel outdated and in disrepair, but the location is good and staff was very helpful. Check the fine print cause it’s not as good of a deal as it looks!
This is definitely not a 4-star hotel. We booked this as a staycation, expecting a nice place to relax after a nice dinner, but unfortunately the experience was disappointing. Check-in was smooth, although I had already prepaid, so it was fairly straightforward. I paid for a “Deluxe King Room” and was placed on the second floor, which wasn’t an issue. However, as soon as we entered the room, it felt very stuffy. The carpet was honestly disgusting to the point where I didn’t even feel comfortable walking around in socks. The room itself was dusty, and there were multiple stains throughout the room, especially on the curtains. The bathroom felt more comparable to a Motel 6 than a hotel advertised as 4 stars. On top of that, the AC unit made a very loud clicking noise every time it turned on, which made it difficult to relax. Overall, the room simply did not meet the standards or expectations of a 4-star hotel. At checkout, I wasn’t even asked how my stay was. I was simply told, “You’re good.” I would expect at least some level of appreciation for staying there and a simple question about whether everything was okay with the stay. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t recommend this hotel based on my experience.
I was extremely disappointed with the Melrose Hotel in D.C. They wanted to charge me a $50 early check-in fee when I arrived a couple hours early, but I refused because, in my experience, if a room is ready, hotels usually accommodate without extra fees. The front desk staff was unwelcoming, with no greeting and a visibly irritated attitude when I asked questions. The rooms were not clean. There were stains on the carpet, and in one of the rooms there was a dirty condom on the side of the bed. The hotel is very dated, with peeling wallpaper and poor upkeep. I would not stay here again.
Room 613 — Visit date February 20, 2026 Jen saved the best for last. The suite-style layout was excellent — living room up front for activity and the bedroom tucked around the corner for privacy. The King bed was outstanding, and transitioning back to a Queen at home will be difficult. Pillow game was strong. One practical drawback: not enough electrical outlets for modern travel needs. Between mobile phones, laptops, GoPro cameras, and wireless headphones, accessible plug-in space was limited. There was a building-wide HVAC issue during our stay, and the system was pushing hot air despite February temperatures. We solved it by opening the windows and letting in the 35° D.C. air, which worked surprisingly well. The embroidered dark “Makeup” towel was a thoughtful touch — a small detail that shows attention to guest experience. Where the stay fell short was in bathroom functionality. The single-handle shower control spins fully around with no clear stop point, making temperature and on/off positioning confusing at first. The wall-mounted Molton Brown shampoo/conditioner/body wash dispensers looked upscale but dispensed inconsistently and often dribbled product down the bottles. Bath towels were smaller than expected. One additional note for fellow drivers: the hotel does not have dedicated self-parking. If you’re conditioned to seeking out garages in major cities (Seattle habits die hard), plan ahead. The baggage attendant was friendly and helpful and suggested using SpotHero. Following that advice, I found overnight parking nearby for $25 instead of the $76 valet rate. Overall, the room layout and bed comfort were excellent. The stay was very good — just a few execution details kept it from being five stars.
Our family had a wonderful stay here! Close walking to everything you need, Trader Joe’s and Starbucks just up a block. Georgetown shopping just a 5 min walk. Staff is so friendly! Rooms are very spacious and cozy. Headboards are faded and look a bit tired, but not a dealbreaker. Only suggestion - we would have liked a more professional dressed and attentive bartender, the lady bartender who worked when we stayed (Jan 29-Feb 1) would disappear for very long periods of time. She dressed like she was going to dance at a strip club (breasts literally falling out). For a family hotel, not appropriate.
We stayed at the Melrose Georgetown Hotel for three (3) nights. First, the location is wonderful if you are visiting D.C. and surrounding areas. There are plenty of GREAT food places nearby from casual to upscale! There is no free parking so be prepared to spend $70 a day if you rent a car or bring your own. My advice is to uber and walk. You will save a lot of money this way. We rented a car and didn't use it but one day during the trip. The Uber community in downtown D.C. is phenomenal! Check-in was nice, the night staff was very laid back and kind. There is a $300 hold for your stay, I'm assuming this is $100 per night. The lobby was very fancy looking and gave a high-class feel. The rooms, not so much..... The rooms could use a major makeover as far as paint, furniture, a deep clean, repair of the AC/Heating system, and bathroom drains. If you aren't too big on everything being fancy and just need a nice place to stay for a fair price in downtown D.C. then none of this will be a problem for you. Sides of the bed were very dusty (chucks of dust and old stuff), the headboard had an old booger on it, the sink was stopped up, and the bathroom is very small. We cleaned the room ourselves the first night and just continued to do so ourselves the next three (3) nights. We figured if they didn't clean the room before us, what would make a difference now. There is a fee that wasn't expressed upfront, so I advise to call the hotel front desk and speak with them and ask them questions about all fee's before booking. The checkout process was a bit sketchy, the older lady took my room keys and told me that I would be checked out after the morning audit is complete and did not provide me with any other options. She told me this in a manner of I had no other choice and this is what we are going to do. I did not receive an email confirmation or printed receipt at the "time of checkout" nor have a received a final receipt by the time of this review (The next day). If you used valet, you will have to walk with security to retrieve your car if you need it before 7 AM! The parking garage is very tiny and the parking spots are very hard to get out of. Took me 5 minutes to pull from the parking spot. Overall, I recommend this hotel if you just need somewhere to stay close to downtown D.C. and you don't really care about the quality of the hotel. If not, I cannot recommend the Melrose Georgetown Hotel.
I’m giving this one star because it is the lowest I can go. There is a historic preservation fee that they don’t tell you about till the last day. If you are planning on budgeting on your trip or you do not expect this fee, expect $30 every day you stay there as well as a five dollar occupancy tax. This is not listed anywhere on the website. If it was, we would not have stayed here. I suggest you do the same.
Had an event at Four Seasons and this was the overflow hotel. Well worth it. Historic hotel so rooms have a little wear but still good. The highlight was "Z" (the bartender's nickname) in the lobby. So engaging and cool. She actually made my stay so enjoyable with our conversations. The coffee makers in the room are a little loud, but ok. Coffee in the lobby just off elevators was great to be able to grab and go. Walk to Four Seasons, downtown Georgetown or anywhere else are not bad. Uber was also usually available and arrived really quick if/when needed. Hotel had full umbrellas available in closet if needed which was a nice touch.
