The Hay-Adams consistently receives high praise for its exceptional service, historic ambiance, and prime location overlooking the White House. Guests frequently highlight the warmth and attentiveness of the staff, creating a luxurious and memorable experience. However, recent reviews have raised concerns about inconsistent valet service and occasional staff interactions.
I lost my credit card at the airport, so naturally I needed an alternative payment method. What should have been a simple solution—using Google Pay or manually entering my credit card number—required calling a manager over for approval, which was frustrating. Aside from that, the hotel itself was exceptional. The room was outstanding, the location was excellent, and the overall property exceeded expectations. If the payment process were more streamlined, the experience would have been nearly perfect.
Having stayed at hotels literally all over the world I can honestly say this is one of the best & the experience is excellent. From the historic setting to the customer service that seeks to meet your needs before you ask it is truly a lesson in how important staff attitude & customer service really is & harkens to a, sadly, bygone era. Shout out to the staff as a whole for exemplary service & a special Thank you to Faruz, the beautiful woman who serviced our room, no request or service was too small & her cheerful & happy smile brightened the smallest interaction, she’s a real gem!
Nobody pinch me—I don’t want to wake up from the dream of my most recent stay at the Hay Adams. I feel lucky to have just spent the most wonderful weekend there. Yes, the location (overlooking the White House) is unique. Yes, the building is historical, its architecture and decor beautiful. But what made the trip so special was the unparalleled service. The last time I experienced such hospitality at a hotel… must have been my last stay at the Hay Adams many years ago. Everyone you come into contact with makes you feel welcomed and right at home—from the people opening the lobby doors (Alfredo, Mario), to the hosts and servers at the Lafayette, to the in-room dining team, to the housekeeping team (Sylvette), and on, and on. Every staff member—without exception—was pleasant at a minimum, if not outright warm. Perhaps most impressive was how accommodating they were at every opportunity. If it was within their power, they made it happen. Any minor snags were immediately and graciously addressed. The things that struck me most were how I felt (1) effortlessly at-home, (2) well taken care of, and (3) *unburdensome*. Every moment of my stay was smooth and comfortable. I am grateful to everyone at the Hay Adams for their exceptional warmth and hospitality. Thank you for the loveliest, most restorative weekend.
The Hay-Adams remains an absolute icon of historic elegance and premier hospitality in Washington, DC. The panoramic views of the White House and the city skyline from the Top of the Hay offer an unmatched, breathtaking setting for luxury corporate functions, high-profile milestone celebrations, and sophisticated events. From a design and logistics standpoint, executing a layout here is seamless due to the exceptional coordination and white-glove standards of the venue staff. For a past production in this timeless space hosting an exclusive corporate luncheon, our lavender velvet dining chairs paired perfectly with the spring themed event. The venue's stunning architecture beautifully complemented our premium, modern rental collections. An extraordinary choice for sophisticated clients who demand an elite, unforgettable DC experience. Nostalgia always looks forward to returning.
I recently attended an event at this hotel and used the valet parking service. When I returned to pick up my car, it was parked in a convenient location near the entrance. However, the key was not left inside the vehicle. I asked the attendants at the entrance, and they directed me to Alexander. When I requested my key, he showed it to me but refused to hand it over until I tipped him. He did this in a noticeably aggressive and impatient manner, creating a clear “tip or no car” situation. I was planning to tip anyway for the service, but the experience felt more like extortion than optional gratitude for good service. Tipping should be voluntary and based on excellent service — not a mandatory fee to get your own vehicle back. Another attendee confirmed the same thing happened to them and others. The rest of the event and hotel were fine, but this valet interaction left a really bad taste. Guests shouldn’t have to feel pressured or held up by staff just to retrieve their car and key. I hope the hotel management addresses this, as it reflects poorly on the property.
It was a delight to stay at the Hay-Adams while in Washington DC. Our room overlooked the Lafayette Park, The White House & Washington Monument. Unfortunately they were doing renovations on all the fountains ?? thruout the Park. And the East Wing had been demolished with cranes and the new ballroom construction was on-going. But starting at this Hotel was well located and very comfortable. The bathroom was a bit small comparatively. Service was great!
My wife and I just finished a wonderful birthday “staycation” weekend at the Hay-Adams. From the moment we arrived, we were treated like well-known guests. Both the day and night concierges were tremendously helpful; if you ask, they will escort you to the roof for some great photos. This was only the second five-star hotel for us in DC, and we felt the staff at the Hay-Adams were much more welcoming and personable. We had drinks in the Off the Record, a little too busy for our liking. We really enjoyed our two breakfasts and one dinner at the Lafayette. The atmosphere, attention, and food were top-notch. We really want to do this again, maybe in the spring or fall.
A warm welcome and impeccable service always awaits at the Hay Adams. The restaurant, room service, and downstairs bar add to the positive experience. Highlights are the turndown service after a long day in D.C. and the concierge staff. There are luxury hotels closer to the main museums but you cannot get much closer to the white house. Our favorite place to stay in D.C.
This is an amazing hotel. We had a great experience here. We haven’t really stayed at a place that was quite like this before. It’s was very fancy and a great place to have a nice couples retreat. There were no kids here. The rooms were a little pricier but was worth every penny. The turn down service was a first and worth it. Love what they did for us. The bellhop was absolutely phenomenal. We forgot his name but he was a little bit older but super knowledgeable about everything. He always remembered our names and took us on a private tour to the 9th floor to see the White House at night with the most spectacular view. Worth almost every penny. Be sure to get a package deal cause it will cover a lot and help you not worry about things as much.
I recently visited The Hay-Adams, located across from the White House, and had a disappointing experience that I feel compelled to share. Upon entering the lobby, I was looking for the restroom. Both doormen looked at me as if I didn’t belong there and didn’t offer any assistance. When I asked politely, “Could you please guide me to the ladies’ room?” one of them replied, “We don’t have one.” Thinking it might be a wording issue, I rephrased my question and said “restroom” instead. He repeated, “We don’t have,” and then added, “We have, but only for guests.” I was honestly shocked. I don’t know in which era this mindset belongs, but being treated this way at a hotel that calls itself luxury is unacceptable. I’m currently staying at another five-star property just 15 minutes away, and when I later entered a different luxury hotel to use their restroom, I was met with genuine hospitality and kindness — the kind of treatment that defines true luxury. As a hotelier myself and an avid traveler, I’ve stayed at and visited properties around the world. I’ve never experienced such an unwelcoming attitude. Hospitality is not just about grand décor or a famous address — it’s about how you treat people. Luxury starts with respect, and sadly, this experience was far from it.
