The Hay-Adams offers a prime location near the White House, praised for its exceptional service, upscale ambiance, and stunning city views. While generally receiving high marks, recent reviews highlight some areas of concern regarding staff responsiveness and bathroom size. It’s a strong choice for special occasions or those seeking a luxurious DC experience.
It was a delight to stay at the Hay-Adams while in Washington DC. Our room overlooked the Lafayette Park, The White House & Washington Monument. Unfortunately they were doing renovations on all the fountains ?? thruout the Park. And the East Wing had been demolished with cranes and the new ballroom construction was on-going. But starting at this Hotel was well located and very comfortable. The bathroom was a bit small comparatively. Service was great!
My wife and I just finished a wonderful birthday “staycation” weekend at the Hay-Adams. From the moment we arrived, we were treated like well-known guests. Both the day and night concierges were tremendously helpful; if you ask, they will escort you to the roof for some great photos. This was only the second five-star hotel for us in DC, and we felt the staff at the Hay-Adams were much more welcoming and personable. We had drinks in the Off the Record, a little too busy for our liking. We really enjoyed our two breakfasts and one dinner at the Lafayette. The atmosphere, attention, and food were top-notch. We really want to do this again, maybe in the spring or fall.
A warm welcome and impeccable service always awaits at the Hay Adams. The restaurant, room service, and downstairs bar add to the positive experience. Highlights are the turndown service after a long day in D.C. and the concierge staff. There are luxury hotels closer to the main museums but you cannot get much closer to the white house. Our favorite place to stay in D.C.
This is an amazing hotel. We had a great experience here. We haven’t really stayed at a place that was quite like this before. It’s was very fancy and a great place to have a nice couples retreat. There were no kids here. The rooms were a little pricier but was worth every penny. The turn down service was a first and worth it. Love what they did for us. The bellhop was absolutely phenomenal. We forgot his name but he was a little bit older but super knowledgeable about everything. He always remembered our names and took us on a private tour to the 9th floor to see the White House at night with the most spectacular view. Worth almost every penny. Be sure to get a package deal cause it will cover a lot and help you not worry about things as much.
I recently visited The Hay-Adams, located across from the White House, and had a disappointing experience that I feel compelled to share. Upon entering the lobby, I was looking for the restroom. Both doormen looked at me as if I didn’t belong there and didn’t offer any assistance. When I asked politely, “Could you please guide me to the ladies’ room?” one of them replied, “We don’t have one.” Thinking it might be a wording issue, I rephrased my question and said “restroom” instead. He repeated, “We don’t have,” and then added, “We have, but only for guests.” I was honestly shocked. I don’t know in which era this mindset belongs, but being treated this way at a hotel that calls itself luxury is unacceptable. I’m currently staying at another five-star property just 15 minutes away, and when I later entered a different luxury hotel to use their restroom, I was met with genuine hospitality and kindness — the kind of treatment that defines true luxury. As a hotelier myself and an avid traveler, I’ve stayed at and visited properties around the world. I’ve never experienced such an unwelcoming attitude. Hospitality is not just about grand décor or a famous address — it’s about how you treat people. Luxury starts with respect, and sadly, this experience was far from it.
Service is great in this hotel, they are super helpful and give you the personal attention that you need. The bar is nice to hang out at, the ground floor restaurant serves good breakfast. The gym is small but has well maintained equipment and pretty much what you need. Location is really fantastic to get to the mall and train station to get you around. I will definitely come back and stay here again.
This is a lovely hotel with an excellent location across from the White House. The rooms are both comfortable, clean and charming. The hotel provides an authentic DC stay. But the best part of this hotel is the staff! They were attentive to every detail, friendly and professional. A special thanks to Brian and Sandor who made the best suggestions and reservations on our behalf during our stay. Thank you for a wonderful time. Scott and Gay Lynn Love
We’ve captured many weddings at The Hay-Adams, and it’s always a great experience! The classic architecture, warm ambiance, and stunning city views make it a beautiful setting for weddings. The staff is professional and accommodating, making the day run smoothly for everyone. We always enjoy working here and look forward to coming back! @paperboysweddings
Rating: ????? (5/5) The Hay-Adams is truly exceptional! My cousin’s wedding reception here was nothing short of perfection. From the cocktail hour to the dinner and dancing, everything was flawlessly executed. The service was top-notch—attentive, professional, and welcoming. The food was absolutely delicious, and the drinks were expertly crafted. The elegant ambiance and breathtaking views made the night even more special. We all had an unforgettable time and couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Highly recommend for any special occasion!
This review is only for the bar and dining room. We were neglected and abandoned from the moment we sat down. When water eventually made it to the table, I took a sip, only to feel a sharp glass shard rolling around on my tongue. As I removed the glass from my mouth for further inspection, I noticed that the rim of my glass was sharply chipped. No waiters were to be seen, but I was finally able to get an employee’s attention about a dozen minutes after the incident. The waiter rudely grabbed the cup from my hand and walked off without saying anything. He returned around ten minutes later and firmly set another glass of water down without saying anything word and was gone in an instant. We had a party of four, and three of us ordered cocktails, which arrived about an hour after we ordered them. The drinks were very overpriced ($30 for an ‘espresso’ martini made with Kahlua and Tito’s vodka with no real espresso), and did not taste good at all. The place was crowded with customers, many of whom were also expressing frustration over the neglect, while waiters were a rare sight. After waiting for another hour after finishing our drinks, I eventually had to get up and walk around to find any waiter to provide us with our check. I found all of the waiters gathered in a back room glued to their phones. For three poor quality drinks, it was nearly $100. All in all, if you enjoy being completely neglected by staff, broken glass in your mouth, low-quality yet high-cost drinks, and unfriendly attitudes, then the Hay-Adams is for you. If you don’t like the aforementioned features, avoidance is best. I will certainly not be returning.
