The Potomac Hotel receives generally positive reviews, highlighting its excellent location, attentive service, and comfortable rooms. However, some guests have reported issues with cleanliness, inconsistent service, and operational hiccups, particularly related to room amenities and booking processes. Recent reviews suggest improvements in service and overall experience.
Great location, centrally located. Everyone has been very nice and helpful! The rooms were very clean. I'll update at the end of our stay. The beds are super comfy, love the pillows! It was quiet too, so we had a great night's sleep! We had breakfast at the hotel, it is a buffet on weekends and holidays only. We got free breakfast with our stay (something Expedia gave us) and it would have been almost $100 for it. It was definitely a nice breakfast, but that is a little steep if you ask me. The last day we were here was a weekday and we had to order off the menu, very pricy but everything was excellent. Dolly is a fantastic employee! Very attentive and so nice! Cannot say enough amazing things about Raul upon checkout. He was awesome! Great visit!
It didn’t feel like a five-star experience. It was a very decent hotel in a good location with nice rooms. But take off the wallpaper, and it’s an overpriced Hampton Inn. The pool was small and full of kids. There was no sauna, steam room, or hot tub. Breakfast is not included and extremely expensive. Entertainment options in the room were limited, and we couldn’t get the room cool enough. A maintenance person needed to come into our room at 9:30 pm when we had the lights off because the room above us had issues with their water. When I relayed these issues to the front desk in the morning, the response was underwhelming. If you’re specifically looking for someplace in this exact location and you’re not particularly concerned with value, then I might recommend it. But if you have broader options, I would go someplace else. My wife and I were locals looking for an upscale stay-cation. Next time we’ll look elsewhere.
I recently stayed at the Salamander Washington DC and I can't say enough positive things about the care I received while recovering from surgery. Gonzalo, the front desk manager, went above and beyond from the moment we spoke. He promptly secured a refrigerator for my room and personally checked in to make sure I had everything I needed to be comfortable during my recovery. His kindness and genuine well wishes meant more than he knows. The food was exceptional, nourishing, beautifully prepared, and truly healing during my recovery. The rest of the staff was equally attentive and thoughtful at every turn. This is a hotel that truly lives its values. Five-star luxury is one thing, but the Salamander delivers it with a genuinely human touch.
I'm reviewing the afternoon tea. This was a fantastic experience! I really appreciate the commitment to attentive service and adherence to meeting my dietary restrictions. They also gave me sparkling apple cider instead of champagne because I don’t drink alcohol. They modified some of the food options to ensure that I didn't get any meat and gave us two separate stands so there wasn't any cross-contamination. The food was better than I expected. I enjoyed the smoked salmon and the tart. All the desserts were good, but the cake they gave me for my birthday was the best. Decadent and rich! The teas were flavorful and refreshing. I enjoyed the black currant tea the most. The scone was the most disappointing item because it was very dry. Yuck.
?We stayed here for our anniversary and had a wonderful time! Our room was incredibly spacious, clean, and offered a beautiful view of the river. I especially loved the bathroom, which featured gorgeous marble finishes and a large bathtub. A huge thank you to Gonzalo and the front desk staff, who were so welcoming and accommodating. We also visited the spa and really enjoyed our treatments, though we were a bit surprised to find there is no co-ed area. Overall, a great stay!
Outstanding hospitality, Bravo to Austin at reception for a wonderful welcome, above & beyond service. The room was very clean & beautiful, in room dining was delightful. We enjoyed a waterfront view, housekeeping was exceptionally accommodating special requests. 5 stars PLUS!
Very attentive service staff. High quality rooms and amenities. The gym is above average for a hotel and I really appreciated the cool towels provided. In room dining was decent. Would recommend this hotel to anyone. A lot of construction around it right now but I was not disturbed by it in any way.
I travel a lot and normally don’t write harsh reviews. But this one deserves it. This review is for Owners/Shareholders of the Hotel to know how the management is running the hotel. We had to wait for 45 mins in the morning for regular Buffet Breakfast. Would you believe it? I talked to other guests waiting too. Everyone was annoyed. Arguing with the staff. You can make excuses about Memorial Day weekend, but it’s your problem. Book less people or make arrangements. I ordered some coffee creamer at the room. Had to call them a few times and took another hour before they came. I had a late guaranteed checkout of 4pm (Fine Hotel and Resort Amex Program) and at checkin it was confirmed. I was checked out at 12:20pm in the middle of my stay. I went to frondesk and they said they don’t know how it happened and they checked me back in. All in all a big mess. You come to a good hotel to relax and expect zero frowns on your forehead. This visit was opposite of that. Management is running this hotel down. Owners/Shareholders should know about it. I don’t have any complaints about the employees who were all very nice and trying their best.
My husband surprised me with a stay at Salamander Washington DC for our first anniversary. We stayed here the night we got married, so this trip was meant to be sentimental and special. He planned everything weeks in advance and even booked the same suite. Unfortunately, the experience was a major disappointment. From arrival, service felt off. Valet initially assumed we were dining at Dogon instead of checking in, and no one offered assistance with bags despite helping other guests. I’m 7 weeks pregnant, so the lack of attentiveness was noticeable. Check-in was slow and somewhat confusing, but the bigger issue was the special arrangements my husband had carefully planned. He had ordered flowers and specific treats to be set up in the room before we arrived and even called ahead to confirm. Instead, incorrect items were delivered hours later, and the flowers, which the hotel confirmed they received, never made it to our room. No clear explanation was given beyond “miscommunication.” Breakfast, which was included with our suite, was still charged to the room and was very mediocre. The TVs wouldn’t connect for streaming. Turndown service felt reluctant. I wasn’t feeling well enough for our dinner reservation, so we ordered room service, my Wagyu burger was dry and bland. The suite itself is beautifully designed, but beyond aesthetics, nothing about this stay felt five-star. When my husband spoke to the manager the next morning, she admitted there were no excuses, just internal miscommunication. What was meant to be a meaningful anniversary celebration ended in frustration and disappointment. We won’t be returning.
I booked a room at the Salamander DC for my mom’s birthday, and even two days after checking out she’s still talking about how it was the best birthday weekend she’s ever had. That alone made it worth it. The location is perfect, right along the Washington Channel by the Potomac. It feels calm and tucked away from the chaos of downtown, but you’re still super close to the National Mall and The Wharf. It’s kind of the best of both worlds. The service was honestly amazing. Everyone was friendly, welcoming, and just really on top of things. The rooms were spotless and really comfortable. My mom kept saying how well she slept, which is rare for her when traveling. I booked through Amex Travel and it came with daily breakfast for two, which was such a nice perk. And the breakfast was actually really good, not just “hotel good,” but genuinely delicious. My parents have already said that next time they come to DC, they want to stay here again. That probably says it all. Highly recommend, especially if you’re celebrating something special.
