The Royal Sonesta Washington DC Capitol Hill generally receives positive reviews, highlighting its excellent location, modern rooms, and friendly staff. However, recurring concerns include unexpected fees, inconsistent service, and issues with room features like natural light and bathroom lighting. Recent feedback suggests improvements are needed in addressing these inconsistencies and ensuring a consistently high level of service.
I absolutely loved this hotel, and every time I visit Washington, DC, this is where I want to stay. The room was magnificent and exceeded my expectations. Upon arrival, Dayshea provided outstanding customer service and made me feel welcome from the moment I checked in. The hotel's location was excellent close to everything, and any major tourist attraction was just a short 10- to 15-minute Uber ride away. The housekeeping staff was amazing. My room did not initially have a microwave for reheating leftovers, but after I mentioned it, one was promptly delivered to my room. I also appreciated receiving two complimentary bottles of water each day. A thoughtful touch was the reusable water bottle provided in the room, which was perfect for taking along during my daily adventures. The hotel also features a convenient 24-hour snack store that guests can access and check out from on their own. As an added bonus, there is a wonderful French restaurant located right next door. Overall, I had a fantastic experience and look forward to staying here again on my next trip to DC.
Room was dark and the window faces inside the hotel with fluorescent lighting rather than outside, giving it a claustrophobic feel even though the room was quite big. The bathroom I stayed in didn’t seem entirely clean, but everything else in the room was spotless. Bed was comfortable. Location was great to take the train in and out. When I had to call the staff to ask for a folio I received some unexpected attitude.
I concur with most of the reviews - this is an excellent 4 star hotel. rooms are large with with mini fridge, espresso machine, large bathroom, seating area, desk. I was on the 3rd floor and heard little street noise. HVAC quiet and responsive. they offer a water station near ice machine. like others I was disappointed by the "destination fee". its one thing at a resort but feels a little cheeky at a downtown hotel (for wifi, water, coffee, um really?). its also unfortunate that the app says you can use $12 daily toward room service when in fact you can only use it in the restaurant. I would still recommend. service was excellent. but HQ should reconsider this fee and how its used.
My recent stay at The Royal Sonesta Washington, DC Capitol Hill started off extremely disappointing and unfortunately set the tone for our entire visit. What was supposed to be a fun girls’ weekend was negatively impacted during check-in by a front desk employee named Chris. His attitude was unprofessional and lacked basic customer service etiquette. He repeatedly stated that he could not see the payment for the room, even after I explained that I was prepared to pay and that there was no issue with the funds. Communication was also very difficult—he was wearing a mask and speaking unclearly, often under his breath, which made it hard to understand what he was saying. The situation escalated when he pressured my daughter to show proof of payment, causing her significant anxiety to the point where she became overwhelmed and started crying. What was most upsetting was his response—he told her, “I don’t care about your emotions, I want money,” which was completely inappropriate and unacceptable in any customer service setting. A hotel experience begins at the front desk, and unfortunately, this interaction ruined the start of our stay. I do plan to follow up with management, specifically Liz Vargas, as indicated on the card I was given, to address how poorly we were treated. While we did enjoy our time in Washington, DC overall, this experience has left a lasting negative impression. Based on this encounter, I would not return or recommend this hotel to others.
This was a really nice hotel to stay in for a work trip to DC. I would definitely choose this again. The room was very neat and my coffee maker worked fine and the bathroom was nice too. Cool that they had a dedicated makeup removal towel! The hotel also granted my request for a room with a lovely view! The front desk guys was nice but a little bit weird about my passport which I did not really appreciate, but I think he thought he was being funny or something, idk. Overall, good stay and cant complain.
This hotel is beautiful!! perfect location very close to the White House and lots of other attractions. There are scooters everywhere so it’s easy to get around. The rooms are very nice sized and modern.
We decided to stay at this hotel because we were traveling to DC by train and this hotel is barely a 5 min walk from Union station. The room was spacious, clean and comfortable. The service was excellent. Everyone at the front desk was cheerful and polite. Our coffeemaker stopped working the second day. Soon after we called the front desk about it, a staff member responded. After his attempts to make it work failed, he quickly not only replaced the coffee maker, but also got extra supplies of water, sugar and coffee. We got a $12 discount per night from the restaurant. We did have breakfast in the restaurant twice, but the food there was a little too decadent/heavy for our taste.
I’ve stayed here about 8 times in the past twelve months and I get a different experience each time. Sometimes they put me an in large spacious room at no extra charger. Then sometimes I pay for a larger room and get a small dank room. The bell staff is warm and friendly but the front desk staff are like robots. The food is exceptional but the wait staff if hit or miss. They recently change the entire restaurants staff and I miss the old crew like Alfred. Still the rooms are spotless and the location is convenient. I guess I’ll keep coming back. The rewards program is practically non existent. They aren’t really that into loyalty. That’s too bad.
This was a first time in Washington DC and was quite new The Royal Sonesta Group, but had a wonderful stay, the front desk staff are all awesome, especially Lilette who is truly an asset to the group. Will definitely recommend the property and would love to repeat my stay at such a beautiful, warm and friendly property
We stayed here when they first opened and couldn't have been more impressed. The suite with the view of the postal museum and Union station was truly epic! Huge layout with lots of quality details and impressive windows! The staff here were so kind, from the front desk to the valet, just awesome! An employee even carried our pack n play to our room for us and refused no to accomodate us. The restaurant downstairs is also absolutely delicious. We will be back!
