Travelers appreciate the new, spacious, and modern design of this Washington DC hotel due to its prime location near the Capitol and several attractions. While the French dining and high-quality customer service are frequent standouts, recent outliers describe inconsistent room conditions, such as non-functional amenities and cleanliness issues.
This hotel is beautiful!! perfect location very close to the White House and lots of other attractions. There are scooters everywhere so it’s easy to get around. The rooms are very nice sized and modern.
We decided to stay at this hotel because we were traveling to DC by train and this hotel is barely a 5 min walk from Union station. The room was spacious, clean and comfortable. The service was excellent. Everyone at the front desk was cheerful and polite. Our coffeemaker stopped working the second day. Soon after we called the front desk about it, a staff member responded. After his attempts to make it work failed, he quickly not only replaced the coffee maker, but also got extra supplies of water, sugar and coffee. We got a $12 discount per night from the restaurant. We did have breakfast in the restaurant twice, but the food there was a little too decadent/heavy for our taste.
I’ve stayed here about 8 times in the past twelve months and I get a different experience each time. Sometimes they put me an in large spacious room at no extra charger. Then sometimes I pay for a larger room and get a small dank room. The bell staff is warm and friendly but the front desk staff are like robots. The food is exceptional but the wait staff if hit or miss. They recently change the entire restaurants staff and I miss the old crew like Alfred. Still the rooms are spotless and the location is convenient. I guess I’ll keep coming back. The rewards program is practically non existent. They aren’t really that into loyalty. That’s too bad.
This was a first time in Washington DC and was quite new The Royal Sonesta Group, but had a wonderful stay, the front desk staff are all awesome, especially Lilette who is truly an asset to the group. Will definitely recommend the property and would love to repeat my stay at such a beautiful, warm and friendly property
We stayed here when they first opened and couldn't have been more impressed. The suite with the view of the postal museum and Union station was truly epic! Huge layout with lots of quality details and impressive windows! The staff here were so kind, from the front desk to the valet, just awesome! An employee even carried our pack n play to our room for us and refused no to accomodate us. The restaurant downstairs is also absolutely delicious. We will be back!
Honestly the worst hotel I’ve ever stayed at. As someone who makes online video reviews rating hotels this is the most disappointing. Where do I even begin? Everything was good, check in process was easy, I reserved two rooms for one night to celebrate my mom’s birthday and my husbands. Upon entering the room, the hallway (7th floor) smelled like wet dog completely, the room itself was a bit better but still had a smell. I looked past this because the hotel is pet friendly and I brought my pet with me, free of charge which I was happy about. I paid for early check in, I arrived at 1pm and noticed the heat in my room, and the other room (4th floor) for my mom wasn’t working. This was in December and the room was freezing cold. I booked two one bedroom spa rooms and was very excited to use the whirlpool, but couldn’t due to the room being freezing cold. Maintenance tried to fix the issue but couldn’t, and they inquired to see if we could change rooms. The front desk then told us they didn’t have any other one bedroom spa suites and offered us more blankets… on a day where the high is 30 degrees. As a result I was very frustrated. I had waited about 2.5 hours for maintenance to try and fix the issue all to be told there aren’t any other spa rooms. I spoke to the manager Simon, and let him know how frustrating and disappointing this stay had been so far when he very rudely suggested I check out for a full refund. By this time it was almost 5pm and I had traveled out of state to celebrate at this hotel. Leaving at this point was not feasible and was very unprofessional to offer that as the only solution. My husband then talked to him and the manager Simon told him that there were other rooms available with the spa, just not one bedrooms. I was very confused as to why he didn’t offer this to us before, but after all of our frustration and time wasted we agreed to move to the other rooms. After moving to the other rooms we discovered the whirlpool tubs did not work in either room. Maintenance came and tried to see if they could fix it but they said it couldn’t be fixed in time for us to use it (they needed to replace a part). I appreciate the maintenance man as he tried very hard to fix the issues we inquired. Once again very disappointing because this is the ENTIRE reason I booked this place. I paid over $600 including taxes, fees, parking for ONE NIGHT (the manager waived most of the fees after all of this frustration and time wasted). I expected much better service than this. We ended up staying in the rooms as we were exhausted with all of this back and forth and never used the spa tubs. We also found stains, which look like blood, maybe ketchup on the mattress. This hotel does a great job appearing as clean and luxury but is quite the opposite. If you choose to book this hotel, make sure everything works before you get comfortable.
What an amazing hotel. I would highly recommend staying here. It’s centrally located to stores and restaurants, it’s very clean and aesthetically appealing. I had a king city view room. It was gorgeous and nicely designed. The day shift valet guys were so friendly and welcoming. The front desk staff Dayshea and Hung were so polite and friendly. They even helped me with an issue that I had unrelated to my hotel stay. I plan on visiting DC again soon and I’ve already decided to stay here.
The Royal Sonesta Hotel delivers an unparalleled hospitality experience. From the moment you arrive, the staff sets the tone with warm, professional, and attentive service that truly feels five-star. Every detail is handled with care—from check-in to personalized recommendations—making you feel valued and welcomed throughout your stay. The team goes above and beyond to ensure comfort and satisfaction, creating an atmosphere of luxury and ease. If you’re looking for a hotel where exceptional service is the standard, Royal Sonesta is the perfect choice. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a refined and memorable stay.
Great hotel in a great location. You can walk to the Capitol and many of the house or senate buildings. It’s very close to union station and they can quickly help you get a cab or there are usually scooters and bikes nearby. The hotel and rooms felt clean and spacious. The bed was comfortable and I appreciated the motion activated lights in the closet with plenty of hangers. The bathrooms are nice sized. I do feel like they could have been a bit more deep cleaned. My room was nice and quiet. It was a bit strange having windows that opened directly into a large conference space. I appreciated all the drapes and room darkening so that I could sleep well and have privacy. I wasn’t able to eat at the hotel because of my schedule, I wish they would offer earlier room service. I also would have liked more breakfast options. The $12 credit per day to use at their restaurant would be nice to have refunded when you dont even use it. Staff is polite and helpful. I did have one front desk person who wouldn’t really listen to me when I was showing her my total differed from what I paid at booking. But I was able to get that resolved with a manager. I plan to stay here again and would recommend it.
Spacious room, very good location for our touristy family trip to DC. But what a scam on pricing. I booked a room for 3 nights, but the price I thought I was getting only applied to the first night. "Oh, the price changes daily" -- didn't tell me that. I booked and noted we'd get Fed employee (military, no less) discount when we arrived like all other hotels. Nope. "You'd have to cancel this reservation [as I'm standing at check-in desk] and make a new one, and you can only do that online, not with me." "Destination charge" also not priced at reservation, told at checkout the $33/day was for the wi-fi, the amenities of coffee and bottled water (really?) which we were told were free by the bellman who brought up our luggage. And as I checked out, the guest at the counter next to me asked for courtesy late checkout at noon rather than 11 AM and was told a flat no. We had a 3-day stay and were told that the 3rd day was free. But boy it was not free since they still levied destination fee and plowed extra charges into the 2nd day without telling me they were upcharging. And, my goodness, the bizarre bucktoothed woodchuck and other supposedly whimsical animals (and people) really bordered on grotesque. Good hotel but lousy pricing not well explained during reservation process, not accommodated at checkin and checkout. Maybe this hotel figures they don't have to keep customers happy since DC is awash in tourists and business travel. But I have a long memory. I'll never be back.
