The Watergate Hotel consistently receives high praise for its exceptional service, luxurious rooms, and prime location in Washington D.C. While some guests appreciate the hotel's historic charm and amenities like the spa and rooftop bar, recurring issues with hot water, staff responsiveness, and occasional service failures have been reported, particularly in recent reviews. Despite these concerns, many guests highlight the hotel’s impressive aesthetics, convenient access to attractions, and overall memorable experience.
I loved staying at the Watergate. Every staff member was immediately friendly, welcoming, and asked if there was anything they could help with or do for us. We got so many helpful suggestions from the staff to help make our trip easier while moving around DC for a few days. We were allowed an early check in the day we arrived. On the day we left, we were not due to be at the airport for almost 6 hours after check out and we wanted to go to a museum during that time, so the staff were kind enough to hold our luggage in a secure area at concierge after we checked out, so that we did not have to drag all of that around with us to the museum. The hotel is clean and beautiful. The spa is calming, clean and the pool area is clean and there was no crowding. We had no issues with noise coming from other guests and no interruptions during the night. The restaurant is very pretty, the food is amazing, and the staff remembers your name, even if you are only there for a few days. (I loved George, he was one of the first encounters we had from staff and he was so nice). This is the best hotel I have stayed in around the DC area, probably the best anywhere and I'll be a return customer in the future.
This is by far the worst hotel I have ever stayed at. It is absolutely not worth the money. There was no hot water in the room at all. When I reported the issue, the front desk sent two technicians to my room at 11:30 PM. After checking the valves, they determined that the hot water valve was broken. The excuse I was given was unbelievable: they claimed that because many athletes stay at the hotel, many guests prefer to have only cold water. That explanation makes no sense. They managed a temporary fix for the broken valve, but the very next morning the water was freezing cold again. When I called the front desk, they had no explanation for why it hadn’t been properly fixed the night before. The Kingbird restaurant was just as disappointing. I ordered orange juice and was told 10 minutes later that they were out of orange juice. I then ordered a simple croissant, only to be told they were out of those as well. This was especially frustrating given how extremely limited the menu already is. In-room dining was another failure. I tried ordering through the QR code in the room, but when I called, my request was handled by an automated system that took my contact information, created a ticket, and told me I would hear back. No one ever called. After waiting 15 minutes, I had to call again and specifically ask to be transferred to a different extension just to reach a real person to place my order. There is no way this hotel deserves a 5-star rating. It is a 2-star hotel at best. Due to the repeated issues and complete lack of service, we checked out more than 26 hours early, and the hotel offered no compensation or sympathy whatsoever. Lack of hot water is a recurring issue at this hotel so the staff is simply immune to hearing the complaints and offers nothing to compensate for it. The staff showed little concern and there was no available management to address the ongoing service failures. Overall, a completely unacceptable experience and I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.
I truly loved my stay at the Watergate Hotel. The room was absolutely stunning — beautifully designed, spacious, and exceptionally clean. Every detail was thoughtfully arranged, which made the entire experience feel both luxurious and comfortable. The service was outstanding from start to finish. The staff was professional, attentive, and always ready to assist with anything needed. Their hospitality made my stay even more enjoyable. I highly recommend the Watergate Hotel to anyone looking for a refined and memorable experience. I look forward to staying there again.
Great hotel but little things to do add up. The rooms at the watergate are absolutely stunning, probably the best rooms I have ever stayed in. There is comfy robes, phenomenal shower, and great beds. The service is pretty good with valet, room service, and the staff being mostly accommodating to your request. I would like to say that some of the staff members are pretty rude and gave me an attitude for simple request like asking about pool open and closures times. The location is pretty good, about a 15 minute drive from the national mall and 10 minute drive to Georgetown. If I am in DC again, I would definitely stay at this resort.
We had a wonderful stay at The Watergate Hotel. The service was superb. Every single employee we came across was super nice and made sure our stay went well. The room wasn’t that big but it was clean. One tiny problem we had was that none of the plugs on one side of the bed worked. The pool was amazing and the hot tub and sauna were nice bonuses. Our first night, the hot tub was only lukewarm (basically the same temp as the pool), but it was warmer the second night. It’s within walking distance to a lot of restaurants and attractions. Would definitely stay here again.
My first time staying at the Watergate Hotel was a big success. The service, especially the valet and bell staff, was top notch. The rooms were spacious and had incredible views of the Potomac and the Washington monument. Downstairs bar has an excellent outdoor area to enjoy cigars. The indoor pool was a big hit with my son; his mom enjoyed the sauna and other spa options. Only drawback is that their breakfast options are awful. But there are tons of great breakfast spots right nearby. Lastly, the location is super convenient if you’re bringing a car. The daily parking rate was reasonable and you’re right off of Rock Creek Parkway. If you’re not bringing a car, it’s also nice because there are a ton of taxis available, which I think are a much better value in DC these days.
I came to the Watergate Hotel expecting history… and left feeling like I’d uncovered one of DC’s best-kept secrets. Turns out the only thing being covered up now is how ridiculously good this place is. From the moment you check in, you realize this hotel is on the right side of history. The rooms are so nice they deserve their own investigation, and the views of the Potomac are truly presidential. I tried to find something to complain about, but every detail was so well executed that I had to drop the case. The staff? Absolutely top-tier. Friendly, professional, and always one step ahead — they definitely don’t need a tape recorder to remember great service. The rooftop bar is a real power move, with cocktails strong enough to make you feel like you just won an election. If this place were still making headlines, it would be for luxury, comfort, and five-star treatment. The only thing shady about the Watergate now is the perfect sunset over the river. In short: no leaks, no scandals, no cover-ups — just an outstanding stay. I’d absolutely return for a second term. ????
An iconic historical name, but the actual experience falls short of other DC luxury options. It’s worth a visit solely for the history, but I'd look elsewhere for better stays. The Experience: The rooms are adequate but unremarkable. Dining was mediocre. My guest’s steak was overcooked and had to be sent back. To the staff's credit, they replaced it correctly and removed it from the bill, which was a professional gesture. Service & Booking Issues: I booked through Chase Edit, but the hotel failed to honor most of the benefits. The $100 credit wasn't applied, I was charged for breakfast, and there was no room upgrade. They were also very hesitant to provide a 1 PM late checkout. I followed up via email to dispute the bill but received no response. The first and only time this has happened to me. The Highlight: The Sandalwood Spa is the redeeming feature. The sauna, steam room, pool, and jacuzzi are excellent and provided a much needed space to relax. Verdict: Choose it if you are really into that part of the history, but I'd look at the Waldorf or the Willard.
My wife and I had a wonderful stay at the Watergate. Most notable to us was the attention to detail and thoroughness of the housekeeping staff. In general, all the staff were very kind and welcoming. We felt we were able to easily access much of the westside of DC by walking. The rooms are nice, quiet, and appear relatively recently renovated.
More like a 3.5 start hotel. There was a huge water bug/ roach that crawled into my bathroom (thankfully on my last day) and the front staff kindly removed additional fees from my overall stay. Breakfast was great. I frankly won’t be staying here again though as I would have expected way more in terms of cleanliness eg jacuzzi was very dirty, noisy pool
