This historical, boutique property in DC offers elegant public spaces and exceptional service, but reviews are significantly divided. While guests praise the location, cleanliness, and amenities like the complimentary happy hour, major concerns regarding room soundproofing, cleanliness standards, and dated facilities have led several recent visitors to rate their stays poorly.
A truly exceptional experience. The property was clean, quiet, and very well maintained. Every interaction with the staff was positive and professional. The room offered great comfort and attention to detail, making it easy to unwind. The entire stay felt effortless and enjoyable from beginning to end.
No soundproofing, horrible bathrooms and loud music till 2 am. We stayed 2/20-2/22 - had requested a 1 King Studio Suite Dining Area room. The room had high vaulted ceilings, and absolutely no soundproofing. The hotel boasts itself to be a wedding venue which means loud music, on Saturday this went until 2 am - keeping us up for most of the night. Our neighboring room had an infant with them - the lack of soundproofing was readily apparent as we woke up with each cry. Not the guests fault! But our nice weekend trip left us with little to no sleep due to the hotel. The toilets would not flush, when you (or any neighboring room) turned on the shower the pipes sang loudly - which was lovely to wake up to. The dirty habit was fine - the breakfast was heavily salted and looked and tasted like it was pulled out of a buffet line. We could not get a waiter over to refill waters or coffees - despite being “unlimited”. If you are staying there with the hopes of taking an Uber/Taxi anywhere - check with the Capital One Arena schedule - as an event got out as we were leaving - cars could not get through the traffic and we chose to walk to our dinner as it would take less time (15 min) than wait for the uber to get to us and wait through traffic. The hotel is also tired - could use updating. The bathroom had masking tape holding the shutters closed. For the price we paid - we were sorely disappointed. We would rather stay at the Fairmont or the Sofitel.
Was disappointed in our stay here for Valentine's Day. I stayed here once a few years ago and it was such a high end classy place... has gone down hill since then I guess. I also remembered the rooms being larger with two nice plushy robes and slippers. But the room we were in was TINY, one shoddy robe and no other amenities. The staff at the front desk are a mixed bag of welcoming and very rude. One of them accused my husband of not being a guest there while he was trying to fill up his water bottle. Cleaning crew came knocking on our door at 9am and woke us up (check out isn't until noon). And both of our keys stopped working so we couldn't get back into our room. There was a dog on our floor that also wouldn't stop barking and whining all night. For the price I would highly recommend staying somewhere else. We stayed at the Yours Truly before this but switched for a special valentine's stay, and I honestly wish we just stayed at Yours Truly. Much classier place with kinder staff.
Incredible location, beautiful elegant and modern design mix, and the perfect all-in-one for my couples. As a wedding photographer who has done a half dozen weddings at the Hotel Monaco DC, I've found it to be a very appealing, easy, and stylish option for my clients. The ceremony space is unique and allows for multiple interesting layouts. The nearby museums and streets allow for plenty of great portrait opportunities. But overall my couples love to connect with their people and everything about Hotel Monaco has allowed that to happen with ease.
A pleasant surprise, perfect location. Hotel is clean, pet friendly and the food was really good. What I liked most of all, THE STAFF! From the valet to the front desk, the housekeeping staff, the Bell men, I know I'm missing some people. The point is the staff is outstanding! 5 ?.
This hotel was absolutely beautiful. Our room was very clean, quiet, and well maintained. My only minor complaint was the bed, it was somewhat uncomfortable due to the mattress protector, which made it a bit noisy and less comfortable than expected. We were able to check in early and check out late, which was a huge plus and greatly appreciated. The location was extremely convenient, with many attractions nearby, and the valet parking made it easy to leave the car and use public transportation throughout our stay. We got a free night with points, so that was our only expense! So overall, great stay! The staff was kind, professional, and welcoming the entire time. Thank you for helping make our trip such a great experience!
Everything was great. Loved the building, everything was clean, beds comfortable pillows fresh. Makeup mirror, iron, umbrella. Would have liked slippers. It was bitterly cold and windy outside but the rooms were comfortable and warm. No drafts. The bar closed too early. It was a Sunday, I guess that's why. The wine (half bottle) they sold at the front desk was disappointing. Super friendly staff, even the valet in less than ideal weather. The restaurant, 'Dirty Habit', was pretty good.
I stayed here recently for an overnight holiday staycation. They are located right next to the Downtown DC holiday market and near a few awesome bars/restaurants that are decorated for the holiday season. They are also a few steps away from the arena as well. The hotel itself is rather nice. I stayed in the king one bedroom suite which was absolutely amazing. Very clean, lots of room, and the bathroom was definitely the BEST part. I love a big bathroom that has a separate shower and soaking tub. The staff there were very friendly and extremely accommodating. The complimentary wine social hour in the lobby was an unexpected but amazing bonus. I will most definitely return in the future.
The Kimpton Hotel Monaco DC has a beautiful exterior, lobby, and hallways. The public spaces are cozy, chic, and nicely appointed, and the scent in the lobby is wonderful. The nightly happy hour with complimentary wine from 5–6 p.m. is a great touch, and the bell team deserves credit for always being friendly and greeting me with a “welcome back” when I return in the evenings. Unfortunately, the rooms leave a lot to be desired — especially for the price point. I paid nearly $600 per night for a room that appears to have been converted from a storage space next to the ballroom (Room 422). The ballroom doors are just a few feet from the room, and late at night (around 12:30–1:00 a.m.), I was repeatedly woken by what sounded like a staff member, possibly security, entering and exiting the ballroom. This happened on multiple nights, even after I had raised the issue with the front desk. I also experienced an alarm going off in my room at 6 a.m. (which I didn’t set), a loose floorboard under the carpet in the hallway, and a Peloton in the gym that didn’t function properly. When I tried to follow up through the IHG app, I learned that messages don’t go directly to the hotel but to a call center. Despite multiple follow-ups, I never received a meaningful response, and the message I eventually got felt dismissive. For a hotel at this level, I expected a higher standard of responsiveness and care. The rooms themselves feel dated (aside from the bathroom wallpaper), and both the refrigerator and gym need attention. My in-room “cooler” didn’t work, and the replacement fridge froze all my food solid. The gym was small, stuffy, and had dirty, partially broken equipment. Overall, while the location, bell team, and lobby spaces are wonderful, the guest rooms and service recovery fall far short of what the nightly rate would suggest. I really wanted to love this stay, but the value simply isn’t there.
The high ceilings throughout were stunning. The room was small but had a comfortable bed and a spacious bathroom. Water pressure in the shower was pretty good. Room was good. Staff at the desk was nice and helpful. The restaurant wasn't great. But there are many options in town.
