The Holiday Inn Express Washington DC Downtown consistently receives mixed reviews, highlighting both exceptional service and significant operational issues. While some guests praise the friendly staff, particularly at the front desk, recurring problems with housekeeping cleanliness, inconsistent breakfast offerings, and unreliable amenities such as laundry and drink machines are frequently reported. The hotel’s location is a strong point, but these consistent deficiencies detract from the overall experience.
Difficult to give a high mark for this hotel. There’s a lot they do that are hit and misses. Their front desk people are fantastic. They are friendly, helpful, and courteous. Special shout out to Rachael. The housekeeper is diametrically opposite. My wife and I stayed there for 8 days. Housekeeping did not bother to clean the room 4 of those days. And that’s 2 days consecutive at a time EVEN when we notify and requested them to clean the room! There was one time my wife spoke to the housekeeper to clean the room while we step away for the day and she said yes. Seven hours later we came back to our room only to find no towels and an unkept room. We were on the 11th floor. The breakfast buffet is a big disappointment. Breakfast time was 6.30 to 9.30 on weekdays and 7 to 10 on weekend. Bread box is always empty. Yogurt is hardly refilled. It’s almost a guarantee there will be almost no food left half an hour before closing. No refill. No action from the staff. Just standing at a corner with her earpods glued to her ears. To top it off, the chef, Dion was condescending. I’m a Holiday Inn gold member. This property needs a lot of improving.
Room was fine and the staff was good. But, first we did not expect to getting a corner room for our 20th anniversary as requested but we were flat out lied to several times. Initially they said it’s possible but upon check-in one of the staff said it’s for handicap guests only but that was a lie. Then their Sundry was out of soft drinks and each day we were told they should be stocking it soon but that never happened over our five day stay. This was the same for laundry detergent. So again, more lies. Then we were told the laundry was free upon check-in, but that too was a lie. Now the onsite laundry room for this large hotel only has one washer and one dryer which stayed in use throughout both of our final two days. As a Platinum Elite member, I’ve stayed is smaller IHG hotels that had 4-5 machines. The onsite parking garage is expensive for being a hotel guest and not worth using it. It also fluctuates daily without ANY notice. If you’re unaware and you’re flying into DC, use ride share for your transport. I suggest Lyft. There are food options in walking distance but they are not worth writing home about. But we do suggest trying Golden Chick Chinese takeout (flyer in the lobby). Overall, I’d find it hard to recommend the hotel but then again I just might.
Rooms were OK but had not been vacuumed in a while. The drink machine was empty most of the time. The Inn has one washing machine/dryer for the entire Inn. Front desk rarely answered the phone. Ice machine on 3 floors only. Water pressure not that great. Since we were gone all day, the room served its purpose for a shower and bed. You have to carry your luggage to the room yourself. The breakfast is cerel. If you park in their garage and want to get something out of your car, it is an act of God to get that accomplished. The location is good, close to everything but I would not recommend staying here.
Attention to detail is what really makes a good hotel stay, unfortunately the management here has let that slide among their staff. A few things from a short 2-day stay: *Room was not made up after the first day, I called at 5 p.m. when I arrived back and instead of apologizing they kept trying to suggest I must have left the do not disturb sign on the door. *When I arrived there were FIVE decaf coffee pods and no regulars. I asked a staff member who was cleaning in the hall for a regular pod and she didn't give it to me until she looked herself in my room and took the decaf pods. The next day after housekeeping finally came I once again had only decaf! *The room is really really dark, there is only one light in the corner. There is a tiny desk lamp on the desk (which is literally only 12 inches wide, not enough to hold a laptop. The desk light is not bright enough to let you read! *Breakfast: For my entire stay they were out of both orange and apple juice, is there really no IHG hotel nearby they can replenish from? The pancake machine was also out of order (Far too common) The signature cinnamon roles were evident only from the sign, but there were none either day. The consistent breakfast is one reason I stay at HI Express. On the second day the staff member loudly interrupted a full breakfast room to give a speech about being nice to your neighbor. I didn't need to hear this. *Lobby offers free hot chocolate and coffee 24 hours but the hot chocolate was almost never stocked. *Twice when I called the front desk, no one answered. *No washcloths provided. This hotel really needs new management.
I stayed at the Holiday Inn a few months ago for a conference, and it truly exceeded my expectations. From start to finish, the service was outstanding. I want to give a special shout out to Eyob at the front desk for his patience and efficiency during check-in. I had three additional rooms under different names but all needed to be on the company card. He handled the entire process with calm and friendly attention. A special thank you to Rachel Pope at the front desk who was fantastic. She helped me extend my stay seamlessly and even coordinated holding my bags so I could finish my conference without carrying everything around. Her professionalism and kindness made a stressful day so much easier. While I didn't catch their names, the valet staff were incredibly kind and accommodating throughout my stay. And the person who keeps the breakfast area running smoothly deserve recognition as well. The breakfast was way more than what I expected, with made to order pancakes and warm egg and sausage options every day. The attendant was quick to bring out anything I needed and made sure everything was well stocked. Overall, this hotel provided exceptional service and I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. Thank you to the whole team for making my conference trip a great experience.
Solo traveler, King's Suite for 2 nights ($123/night). Nov. 21 weekend Good hotel with multiple bars/cafes/restaurants within 10 minute walking distance. 7/11 down the block as well. Room was clean with a comfortable bed, a mini lounge area (a couch and a coffee table), and a wall mounted flatscreen TV. The bed has side tables with wall outlets and adjustable lamps on both sides. Standard single serve coffee machine and mini fridge available as well. Bathroom was clean. The only issue I had, like some of the other reviews mentioned, was when the lights would automatically turn on sometimes so I would have to get up and turn them off myself. I woke up early for breakfast but I'm sure they'll still have food available an hour or two after opening the line. No long waits since it's self serve. Usual American Continental breakfast of eggs, sausage, bacon with a pancake/waffle machine. Options for fruit, milk/juice, and cereal as well as a coffee/hot chocolate bar. Around a 15-20 minute walk to the nearby museums/attractions/National Mall area. Parking valet is expensive on site, around $65 + per night. Recommend using the paid parking lots nearby since they're cheaper. LAZ parking lot and another paid parking lot behind the nearby church (with exception of Sundays since it's reserved) are the closest options. Not a bad stay here if you're visiting, look for price drops.
The place looks great. It seems to be recently updated. The update was not high quality. The linoleum in the bathroom is not glued down. It flexes when you walk on it. The lights and fan in the bathroom are motion and noise sensitive. This means anytime you walk in the bathroom everything comes on. This also means when the AC turns on and off, everything comes on. Beds are very hard. Shower door would not stay closed, wet floor. Found some kind of particles under the pillows, possibly tobacco leaves. First day at breakfast, near end of time, almost everything was gone. Bacon and sausage is very greasy. No selection of fruit juice. Over 4 days, was typically out of bread, muffins, or bagels. Cheese Omelette was gross. Cheese was very grainy with a very chemical flavor. Get coffee and have cereal. Staff was very friendly and responded to our complaints quickly. There is no parking. They have valet, which is very expensive.
This was our first trip to Washington DC and we are so happy with our choice to stay here! We were greeted by Brian upon arrival. He was the most polite, helpful and educated hotel employee we have ever encountered. That says a lot since we travel frequent all over the U.S.! Dion is always full of happiness and brightens up everyone's day! He is very kind and makes sure that everyone has all of their needs met for breakfast and offers assistance for any other needs. These two men are the cherry on top of our Washington DC trip! The rooms are very clean, housekeeping comes everyday and the bed is very comfortable. The location is wonderful and close to many restaurants, metro stations and stores, including a grocery store. Thank you again Brian and Dion for being so warm and welcoming! We give you a 10/10 for the warm and welcoming treatment you gave not just us, but everyone you encountered!
Half good, half bad. The front desks were not so warm in welcoming the guests. Probably it was a busy season. I met 3 valet parking staff and 1 of them had very awful attitude. The most amazing hotel staff was the gentleman serving at the breakfast area. Every morning, he welcomed and cheered everyone with inspiring words to remind us to be grateful and kind. The hotel should promote him as the manager so this hotel can have more "temperature".
Great location! We enjoyed a clean, comfortable and quiet room there on Christmas Eve. The breakfast was also pretty good, though the guy that was serving breakfast could certainly do with more training as to how to deal with individuals with Service Animals. However, what is probably BEST about this hotel is the customer service that was provided by Sade and Antoinette!!! They are the reason I am giving this hotel a 5 star rating. Customer Service truly makes all the difference in one's experience, and they were both personable, professional, and helpful--which is much appreciated!
