The Hilton Garden Inn Washington DC/U.S. Capitol offers a convenient location near the Metro and a comfortable base for exploring the city, but consistently receives mixed reviews regarding maintenance, service inconsistencies, and unexpected fees. Recent feedback indicates an improvement in staff friendliness but highlights ongoing issues with room upkeep and operational details.
The hotel is nice and my experience with the front desk staff was a good one. Housekeeping was a little off, as things like removing dirty towels and replenishing toilet paper weren't done. The hotel itself is clean and the restaurant area is open and inviting.
Great experience because I checked in and out per my timing rather than standing in line. Used the Hilton app for reservation, check in, and check out. No one asking how many keys. Larger than expected corner room. Clean, comfortable. The cleaner tidied daily. Convenient to my meeting and DCA. Walking distance to a rail stop. Next to a grocer. Decent happy hour. The outdoor courtyard was a nice surprise. The service rating reflects that I did not use the pool, gym, valet parking, restaurant, or interact with the lobby staff during my stay. I felt as though the staff were standing by to assist if needed.
?I would not choose to stay at this hotel again. While the location is fantastic, the lack of basic services, hidden fees, and poor room maintenance made for a very frustrating experience. If you are considering staying here, there are several things you should know first. ?? The Biggest Cons & Warnings ?NO Daily Room Service: Most importantly, this hotel does not allow you to request daily room service. It is not an option they will even entertain, regardless of how many times you ask. If daily refreshing is important to you, look elsewhere. ?Hidden Valet Fees: Valet parking is posted at $55 overnight, but they hit you with an unposted tax of $8 and change every night. Expect an extra surprise charge on your daily bill. ?Room Maintenance Issues: The hotel feels quite dated, and my room had multiple maintenance problems right out of the gate: ?The room safe did not work upon arrival. I had to ask twice and wait a long time for someone to come fix it. ?The shower dripped constantly. ?The toilet tank was loose and not properly attached to the base. ?The bathroom mirror light gets incredibly hot—almost hot enough to act like a mini heater. ?Cosmetic Wear & Tear: The carpet had multiple noticeable spots, and the top dresser drawer was badly stained. Housekeeping keeps the room clean, but the stained furniture and carpet simply need to be replaced. ??? The On-Site Restaurant ?The restaurant service is incredibly slow and very expensive for what you actually get. ?The Bad: The protein portions are tiny. I ordered a chicken Caesar salad that came with an abundant amount of lettuce, but only two mini slices of chicken. ?The One Exception: If you do eat here, get the steak dinner. At $39, it was the only thing on the menu that felt worth the price. ?? The Only Positives ?Amazing Location: This is the hotel’s best feature. It is located just one block from the Metro, making transit incredibly easy. ?Convenience: There is a grocery store right next door with a great assortment of items. ?Comfortable Bed: The bed itself was comfortable, and the linens were very clean. For the most part, the housekeeping staff does a good job with what they have to work with. ?Final Verdict: Do not be fooled by the great location. The combination of zero room service options, maintenance oversights, and hidden fees means your money is better spent elsewhere.
Management represents it as upscale, but Garden Inn was actually quite disappointing. First, the AC, although it works quite well, every time it engaged it was loud and created a strong wind directly on the bed. The wind required that we protect ourselves by covering, even though we had set the thermometer a little higher to prevent the room being too cold. We had to be almost completely covered with just our faces uncovered and away from the AC blower. Second, although I understand that rooms must be maintained and refurbished, perhaps storing the bed-frame in the hall is not the best way to represent your property. (photo included) The photo below was directly outside of our room. Third, while refurbishing the rooms, perhaps taking care of the threadbare carpet in front of the elevator would be a slightly higher priority. (photo included) The appearance of the carpet, though not a significant flaw in the big picture, it certainly made an impression every time we walked to the elevator. And last, the "hot breakfast", wasn't hot. The eggs were cold. I'm willing to pay for extras but I also expect what I have paid for. Rather than pay for their relatively expensive 'hot" breakfast, just get the continental breakfast, which includes cereals, juices and pastry. I've stayed at many hotels and motels and have been quite happy with other Hilton properties, but now I must question the value of the Hilton name. I would like to point out that everyone was friendly and helpful and they seemed to be doing their best. I have absolutely NO complaints regarding the staff that we met.
The rooms themselves were great, comfortable and had everything for a good stay. The hotel itself is a bit cramped and in an awkward build. The amenities didn't seem to ever be working, whether it be the TV, the room phone, or the hot tub and pool (the temperature of the pool was quite warm, but the hot tub was frigid, so I think they were switched?). The best part of our stay was some of the staff: Moe at the breakfast bar and Keith in general staff. The rest of the stay was mediocre.
We got a big room with a king size bed. The room was clean and nice. A mini fridge, kettle, safe was in the room. The staff was kind and helpful. We did not try the breakfast or restaurant. The area is clean and vibrate, there is a big supermarket just around the corner. 3-4min from the metro, red line.
Myself and My BFF had a little girls weekend get away. The bed is so comfy, clean room and staff was nice especially ms Cassandra she was sweet and treated / greeted me and bestie every time we saw her. Gave us some good food recommendations and wished us a blessed stay. Only negative was the shower water pressure in the rooms where lacking.
No one @ reception for 5 minutes: when front desk staffer emerged, I got a lecture on why my booking was 2nd class (via Hotel Tonight ) and suggested I step aside while she helped the other guests waiting. It went downhill from there. Rooms are adequate, reasonably quiet, bathrooms are noisy & ready for a refresh, but the location is convenient & there are better than average amenities available (restaurant/bar + gym ) -- but it's not easy to enjoy ANY of that when staff are so rude.
During our stay at the Hilton in Washington DC, Dre made our experience unforgettable. From the moment we sat at the bar, she greeted us with genuine warmth and an energy that immediately made us feel welcome. Her attention to detail was outstanding — she anticipated what we needed before we even had to ask, offered great recommendations, and crafted every drink with care and skill. What really stood out was how effortlessly she balanced professionalism with a friendly, personal touch. Even when the bar got busy, she never missed a beat and made sure we were always taken care of. It’s rare to find someone who can elevate an entire stay, but Dre absolutely did that for us. If you’re visiting the Hilton, do yourself a favor and stop by the bar. Dre is exceptional, and she turned a simple nightcap into one of the highlights of our trip
Location is great, right around the corner from a metro stop so you can get any around the city quickly! Staff is extremely friendly and kind. Super quick to help with everything. Rooms a good. King bed was really comfortable. Wish there was some kind of seating around outside of the desk and office chair but not the end of the world. The bathroom sink had crazy high pressure which splashed water everywhere but after the surprise of the first use, it was fine. Overall really great stay and we’ll be back again for sure because of price and location.
