The Sofitel Washington DC Lafayette Square is consistently praised for its excellent location and service, offering convenient access to Washington D.C.’s landmarks and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. While most guests appreciate the hotel’s elegant design and comfortable rooms, some have noted issues with outdated amenities, inconsistent service levels, and occasional operational hiccups such as bar hours or room service delays.
Stayed at Sofitel for a work assignment for two weeks. Location fantastic, staff very friendly and helpful. Room was quite comfortable, AC was sometimes a little questionable at night. Main things that need addressing are availability of coffee in the morning and refreshing citrus water combinations in afternoon. For working individuals, 7am coffee is far too late, it should be available much earlier. For the citrus water in the afternoons, maybe make it available all day! It’s delicious!
The sofitel a nice location, but overall we were not impressed, considering this was advertised to us as a five star hotel. The bar was only open from 4 o’clock to 10 PM. We wanted to use our American Express dining credit and didn’t have a chance to because of the inconvenient hours of the bar. The staff was very friendly and provided us water bottles, which is always appreciated, but the room was small and didn’t offer anything special
Our stay at Sofitel Washington DC Lafayette Square stood out mainly thanks to its excellent location — many of Washington’s most iconic landmarks are within walking distance, which made exploring the city incredibly convenient. The hotel itself felt elegant and peaceful, and everything was kept exceptionally clean throughout our stay. Our room was always perfectly serviced and well maintained, which we truly appreciated after long days spent exploring the city. Breakfast was excellent — our favorite dishes were definitely the Eggs Benedict and the Avocado Toast. Another highlight is the hotel’s French restaurant Opaline, which deserves a separate review of its own. During the day, guests can also enjoy complimentary coffee, teas, and lemonade in the lobby and small library area, which we found to be a very thoughtful touch. The hotel also features a well-equipped fitness center, although we did miss having a sauna available. Of course, no stay is ever completely perfect. We were slightly surprised that the minibar was entirely empty, with only a QR code linking to the restaurant menu. Toiletries and tea selections were also not consistently replenished during our stay, and we personally missed having a bidet in the bathroom. What truly elevated the experience, however, was the service. A special thank you goes to Jahki at the reception, who was exceptionally friendly, professional, and genuinely helpful throughout our entire stay. Overall, it is a beautiful and very well-located hotel in the heart of Washington DC — ideal for travelers looking for comfort, walkability, and a refined atmosphere. More on @larmarluxury.
Great location and service. They let us check in to the room super early because of our All Accor membership, which was a wonderful surprise. Nice interior design and very comfortable bathroom. The coffee machine in the room was good plus too. Our room did have a fridge but no microwave, so it may be a good idea to request ahead if you need any of them.
We had a fantastic stay at this hotel during our DC trip. The room was clean, comfortable, and very quiet. The service was consistently great throughout our stay, with small touches that were appreciated like complimentary water bottles and a coffee/tea service in the morning. The restaurant in the hotel was great, we enjoyed breakfast and dinner there. The location is super convenient, walking distance from the mall, museums, and monuments. Overall I would highly recommend the Sofitel for DC travels!
Good location, close to major attractions and great restaurants. Check-in was ok, although it took more than 15 minutes to valet my car, when there did not appear to be any other cars. Room was comfortable and well appointed. Was disappointed in the quality of the food from room service, which was not inexpensive. Also, it appears that someone got access to my room number and last name, and was able to charge $300 to my room from the onsite restaurant - fortunately, the staff called me to verify the charge the next morning and took care to remove it from my bill.
Some hotels add real pleasure to your stay from the moment you arrive until the time you depart. Sofitel Washington is truly one of the beautiful hotels in Washington, offering a perfect sense of calm and elegance. The choice of colors, the refined décor, the beauty of the restaurant, and the excellent location all make the experience exceptional. As a Platinum member of one of the major hotel groups, I still prefer staying at this hotel whenever I visit Washington in the future. This was my first experience here, and it exceeded all my expectations. It will definitely be my first choice going forward.
** My stay was booked via Chase Travel apart of The Edit Collection**. So my stay at this beautiful hotel was definitely something I was totally not expecting. As a loyal chain hotel guy. I took full advantage of Chase’s programming, and I was extremely skeptical as I never book hotels this way. I was BLOWN away with the kind front desk staff, and how spacious, and comfortable my room was. Not to mention one of the best gyms I’ve ever seen. Our stay included dinner, and breakfast, and while it was expensive. It was delicious as well. You are only a few steps from the White House fortress grounds. Overall a solid experience. I would also add that the hotel is extremely personal. A really nasty winter storm ruined my travel plans, and they were completely understanding, and offered to refund a night of my stay.
The Sofitel DC is currently listed as a 5-star hotel, but my recent stay fell short of that standard. Many of the touches that once defined a luxury experience (I've stayed here several times in the past decade) are no longer present. There is no doorman, no bellhop, no turndown service, and no robes or slippers in the room. Amenities have clearly been reduced. While the minibar sensor refrigerators are still in the rooms, they are empty and must be stocked only upon request, which feels outdated and inconvenient for a hotel at this price point. Overall, the property itself feels dated and could use a refresh. Breakfast at the Opaline restaurant was another weak point. On weekends especially, the restaurant appears understaffed, leading to delays and a less polished experience than expected. That said, there are positives. The beds are comfortable, the location is excellent, and the staff I interacted with were consistently friendly and professional. Overall, the hotel is adequate and comfortable, but it no longer delivers a true 5-star experience. At best, it feels closer to a solid 4-star property, and expectations should be set accordingly.
The location is convenient but this is falsely advertised as a 5 star hotel. The rooms are spacious but not clean. The service was ok. I stayed on two different nights. The first night there were no upgrades available when I checked in and the second night they claimed to give me an upgrade but it was the same exact room on a different floor. Additionally, the toilet was not functioning properly and the lobby restrooms were out of service. I don’t think I would stay here again.
